In academia, accommodations may need some creativity due to its unique settings and working conditions. Accommodations should be tailored to a worker’s circumstances and specifically take into account what the worker needs in order to remain productive and complete their work effectively.

We also need to pay attention to formal accommodations for academia or else academics will take it upon themselves to take informal accommodations. The process to determine and provide formal accommodations should include the worker’s union and HR, and be documented and approved by the latter. Establishing formal accommodations as the norm within academia would allow for a fairer and more equitable work environment.
